For over 50 years, Nordon Cylinders has been manufacturing hydraulic cylinders here in Australia — built to last, tested rigorously, and trusted across mining, transport, marine, and OEM applications. We're proud to add another mark of quality to that track record: certification to AS/NZS 1554.1, with processes in place to keep it maintained for the long haul.
What is AS/NZS 1554.1?
AS/NZS 1554.1 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for structural steel welding. It sets out requirements covering:
- The materials and welding consumables used
- Joint preparation and fit-up
- Qualified welding procedures
- Qualified welders and machine operators
- Supervision of the welding process
- Workmanship, distortion and dimensional tolerances
- Final inspection and the acceptance criteria welds are judged against
This is the kind of rigour that matters when a cylinder is going into demanding environments where failure isn't an option.
For projects in mining, transport, marine and OEM supply chains, this standard often shows up as a hard specification requirement. If a manufacturer can't demonstrate certification, the customer is left to manage that risk themselves, qualifying and overseeing a separate welding subcontractor to get the job over the line.
Why it matters for our customers
Across the Australian cylinder manufacturing landscape, few — if any — competitors publicly call out this specific certification. Some lean on build quality and warranties, others reference marine classification specs or design standards, but AS/NZS 1554.1 compliance isn't something we've seen widely advertised.
That gap is where Nordon can make a real difference. With this certification in place, we can take on projects where AS/NZS 1554.1 is non-negotiable — without our customers needing to separately qualify or manage that welding scope.
Turnkey, from design to delivery
This isn't just a certificate on the wall. It means Nordon can take a project from initial design through to certified, welded delivery — all in-house, all under one roof. One point of contact, one quality process, one less thing for your project team to coordinate.
